BBC NEWS: the funniest Briton of all time.
  • Here's something scary about the once-proud British Empire. In the entire history of their country, only 12 men have been funnier than Mr Bean. I don't believe I can name an American less funny than Rowan Atkinson. Not even Pauly Shore. Maybe Dick Cheney.
  • Amazingly, the guy I would have picked, Peter Cook, didn't even make the list, nor did Eric Idle, or Michael Palin.

  1. All very strange, a bunch of dead, lame comedians dominating the list. Then you realise it's a Readers Digest poll (target demographic: 80+) and it starts to make perfect sense.

  2. you obviously haven't seen Rowan Atkinson in Blackadder - comedy genius. What is it with you yanks? you adore our comedy, yet you didn't get Blackadder, one of the greatest sitcoms we've ever made. It's our Seinfeld and it's sad that your only knowledge of Atkinson comes from Mr Bean!

    I agree completely about Blackadder

I have The Complete Blackadder set on DVD, and it surely is one of the five best comedy series of all time, from any country. It is nearly impossible to overpraise it, for it is not only funny, but is also scathing social saire, brilliant history, and can even be very touching (the last WW1 episode).

But that doesn't change the fact that Rowan is Mr Bean and Johnny English.
