News in Science - Humans have a bit of shark in them - 30/05/2007

"Some 450 million years ago, sharks and humans shared a common ancestor"
This makes sharks our distant cousins, or not so distant in the case of Donald Trump.

  1. The article raises a good point. When doing genetic analyses, the degree of relatedness depends strongly on which genes are used. Typically you want to use genes that all your test species use. Genes that are dormant in an organism, e.g. mammals don't produce chitin, but the genes for it are likely present, can undergo crazy mutations and give corresponding degrees of connectedness.
