The Reds' motivation on this trade is baffling. Don't get me wrong. Rolen is a terrific player. The facts speak for themselves. Over the course of his career (1) Rolen has been a better hitter than Tony Perez; (2) he plays a more important defensive position than Perez; (3) he has won many Gold Gloves at that position; and (4) Perez is in the Hall of Fame.Rolen is not as strong a player as he was a few years back, but he's not washed up. He's hitting .320 and he's only 34 years old. So I'm not putting Rolen down, by any means. But his salary is $11 million per, and the Reds are going nowhere. I could see picking up a guy like Rolen if they were fighting for a big chunk of post-season money, but they are in 5th - only two games ahead of the freakin' Pirates. They've lost nine of their last ten and and they have the fourth worst run differential in all of baseball (minus 81, which is actually much worse than the Pirates), so one guy is not going to help them make a run for anything. It will take about a .545 winning percentage to either win their division or a wild card slot (at this moment, one is .540 and the other is .549), but to achieve that the Reds would have to go 43-18 the rest of the way - playing better than .700 ball, which is the very elite level of legendary teams. Only 9 teams played .700 ball in the entire 20th century. In order to become a .700 team, the Reds would have to pick up Rolen, Pujols, Halladay, Jesus Christ, and Clark Kent. And both Jesus and Halladay would have to pitch on three days rest.
So why would they pick up this kind of salary?
