#1 Alabama won easily against Mizzou.
#2 Oregon didn't play
#3 South Carolina lost a squeaker which could have gone either way against #9 LSU.
#4 Florida beat Vandy easily in a conference game.
#5 WVU was crushed by Texas Tech. WVU had not been rated in the top 15 by Sagarin, so their top five ranking was always on thin ice. Even though we all suspected the end of their reign was coming, they were fun to watch while they lasted.
#6 KSU beat Iowa St 27-21
#7 Notre Dame solidified its credentials by beating #17 Stanford in OT. The key to the game was an OT goal line stand by the Irish. I guess Notre Dame will probably go up to #5, just ahead of LSU and South Carolina. They may even pass KSU and sneak into fourth.
In a #13-#15 match-up of traditional rivals, Oklahoma destroyed Texas, 63-21.
The #22-#23 match-up was another one of those insane, defense-free shoot-outs. Louisiana Tech came back with 27 points in the fourth quarter, but Texas A&M still won 59-57.
Everything else was routine, more or less. The only other thing worth mentioning is that #21 Cincinnati scored in every second-half possession to rout Fordham. Huh? Fordham? I got my B.A. from Fordham and had no idea that they had a football team at all, let alone one which played against major teams! (Adding Fordham to the schedule was a last-minute scramble by Cincinnati to avoid an open home date when TCU ditched the Big East at the altar to join the Big 12.)
Fordham's team was really great in the mid-30s, when Vince Lombardi formed one of the Seven Blocks of Granite. In 1937 they were ranked #3 nationally when the only blemish on their perfect season was a tie against #1 Pitt, and that was a 0-0 tie, so their defense actually shut out the nation's #1 team! The school dropped football completely in the early 50s, however, and had no team at all in a 35-year period which included my years there. OK, I now realize that they're just an FCS team, and Cincinnati did slaughter them, but they managed to score in every period against a nationally ranked team. Even more important, they actually have a team!
