2016 NFL Playoff Standings

The Raiders didn't seem to realize how important that game was. That loss cost them a first-round bye.

  1. As I've written before, I'm a math geek and I very likely have asperger's, so I love looking for symmetry, and there were a number of them with the NFL playoff teams.

1.6 of 12 (50%) NFL teams that made the playoffs in this 2016-2017 season made the playoffs in 2015-2016 (New England, Houston, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Green Bay, Seattle) in MLB, 5 of 10 teams (50%) that made the playoffs in the 2015 season made the playoffs in 2016.

2.All four of the AFC division winners made the playoffs in 2015-2016 (New England, Houston, Pittsburgh, Kansas City)

3.My favorite symmetry: The four wildcard teams last season, were all division winners this season (Green Bay, Seattle, Pittsburgh and Kansas City.)

4.Two teams made the playoffs with 9-7 records last season (Houston and Washington), two teams made the playoffs with 9-7 records this season (Houston and Detroit.) Washington won their division last year with their 9-7 record, Houston won their division this year.

5.Green Bay (10-6) and Houston (9-7) had identical won/loss records with last season.

Of course, most of these things aren't unlikely and I can't think of any more symmetry and there are an awful lot of results with no symmetry, so that's why all of last years wild card teams winning their divisions this year is my favorite. I suspect that's pretty uncommon.

In terms of my predictions. I think New England and Kansas City will easily make the AFC final. I'd like to predict Dallas and Green Bay would make the NFC final, but they'll likely meet up in the semi final.

I don't have a prediction on who will emerge from the NFC, but I don't think predicting New England winning the Super Bowl is a difficult prediction.

  2. One more: None of this year's wildcard teams made the playoffs last year.
