Court rules - Fake checkpoints OK in search for motorists' illegal drugs. Pretty smart cops posted a bogus sign about "drug checkpoints ahead". There were no checkpoints (which are illegal because there is no "probable cause" to search the cars), but the police went after people who made u-turns and tossed stuff out the window. If they found drug paraphernalia tossed out the windows, they would pull over the car for littering. The drug paraphernalia plus the evasive action add up to probable cause for a search! Those tricky devils.
