Nostalgia: Painter behind 'See Rock City' barn signs dies at 89. Clark Byers, who braved charging bulls, slippery roofs and lightning bolts to paint 'See Rock City' on 900 barns across the South from 1937 to 1969, died this week. He was 89. He is succeeded by one son who painted all those South of the Border billboards, and another son who did the Wall Drug signs.
