The latest Woodward excerpt: Cheney Was Unwavering in Desire to Go to War.
  • I have to say only one thing really concerns me in looking back through all this, and that was Dick Cheney's repeated assertions about Iraq's nuclear weapons. The failure to find other weapons - that can all be blamed on intelligence failures or maybe just on our failure to find them so far, and knowing that, one can still assume that everyone's intentions were good and noble. We do want to believe our government, after all, and pretty much everyone on both sides of the argument, in many parts of the world, believed that Saddam had bio and chem weapons. I think many people still believe the evidence will eventually prove that he did. But the nuclear thing - that's troublesome. It seems to me that either Cheney was (1) so freakin' dumb that he actually believed that despite no supporting evidence, and much evidence to the contrary, or (2) so cynical and dishonest that he was willing to say anything that would drum up enough panic to support the case for war. I don't believe that Mr Cheney is an unintelligent man, so I think that number two is the only possible answer, and that scares me.
