As Sir Ed points out in his own autobiography, View from the Summit, he was a humble, unknown Kiwi beekeeper, just discharged from the wartime armed services, an amateur mountaineer with no international reputation, when Hillary Clinton was born. He would climb Everest some five and half years later.
