- When I lived in Scandinavia, I used to tell visiting Americans a true story and they thought I was kidding. Many poor Poles would go to Sweden or Norway to commit crimes. It was a no-lose proposition. If they got away with the crimes, their Scandinavian booty bought a great life in Poland. If they were caught, well, life in a Norwegian prison was still better than life in Polish poverty.
