Placid mediocrity ruled the Oscar weekend. There were no surprises among the top performers, and there were no noteworthy trends. The weekend was 2% above last year, 3% below 2005. Yawn. The closest thing to excitement came from the bottom of the charts, where three new releases swapped funds. The Astronaut Farmer and The Abandoned, between them, fell about four million short of expectations, but the slack was taken up by an unheralded film called Amazing Grace, which finished in tenth place with more than $4 million, despite being in fewer than 800 theaters. When all the dust has cleared and these estimates are replaced by official results, Amazing Grace may end up with the highest revenues per theater! (As it stands now it is a virtual three-way tie between The Number 23, Amazing Grace, and Ghost Rider)
Amazing Grace is a biopic about an 18th century idealist who fought to abolish slavery in the British empire. It stars the guy who plays Reed Richards in the Fantastic Four
