My weekly comparison chart will be in tomorrow's edition because everyone did a four day forecast this week, but the basic overview is that the numbers are strong, but lower than expected. The general consensus was that the three-day weekend would break the all time record ($210 million for the top twelve films), but it appears that it will fall a hair short of that - maybe $15-20m or so. It would have been close to the record if Pirates had not opened a day early, thus siphoning off $14, from the weekend to Thursday. Well ... maybe. Nobody really knows how much of that $14m is cannibalization and how much is incremental.Having written all of that with some negative spin, I should probably change course a bit and point out that it was still one of the best weekends in the history of film, so perhaps the forecasts were just too aggressive. Pirates did take in about 10% more than X-Men 3, which was last year's featured item over the Memorial Day holiday.
