The internet is, to be sure, filled with useless junk. But when it's good, it's very, very good, because it gets all sorts of obscure material into the light for everyone to see.

I hate Edith Piaf's singing, but there is no singer more closely associated with a time and place than Piaf and France in the 1940s, and when I hear her voice it transports me to another world. She is at the same time rather more and rather less than a great singer. She is a great cultural icon, on a pedestal so high that her actual musicianship is irrelevant.
