Some are obvious, like the best player ever to wear #23 or #99, but there was lots of competition elsewhere. The best athlete ever to wear #7? Not Mantle, per this summary, but I'd go with Mantle over their choice.#33? Not Larry Bird.
#32 was the source of the hottest competition. The winner was neither Koufax nor Jim Brown(!!) Wait? A better athlete than Jim Brown? Did Olga Korbut wear a number? As far as I can recall, Jim Brown was the only athlete in history considered at one time or another to have been the best player in the world at two completely different and unrelated team sports. That's tough to beat, but their choice is (debatably) valid. Can you name him before looking?
