The game provided a dramatic moment in Anderson's pursuit of one of baseball's longest-running records. After he had already rung his total up to ten with two doubles and two homers, Anderson got one more at bat in the bottom of the eighth, with two out and two on. If he had hit a homer, the 13 RBI would have bested an all-time major league high which has endured for 83 years! A two-run double would have tied the record. I'd love to tell you that he was robbed of a homer by a brilliant defensive play, but he grounded out meekly to short to end the inning. The final score in this classic pitching duel was 18-9. (A-Rod hit two homers for the opposing Yankees.)
Two guys have accumulated 12 RBI in a game, and two others have managed 11, so Anderson tied for the fifth best in history. For the record, the last guy to knock in ten in a game was A-Rod in 2005. The only other active player to do it is Nomar, who accomplished it in 1999.
Sunny Jim Bottomley was the first major leaguer to knock in ten or more when he knocked in an even dozen in mid-September of 1924. That total has never been bested, although Mark Whiten matched it in his four-homer game in 1993.
Whiten is not a likely candidate to hold the important all-time records for "most homers in a game" and "most RBI in a game." The year before his monster game he played in 148 games, batted more than 500 times, and managed to amass only nine homers and 43 RBI! But he pulled off the four homer, twelve ribbie game, and dats da name a dat tune.
