The biggest surprise was that the #1 new film, among a weak crop, was ... Mr. Fucking Bean! The rubbery-faced one doubled expectations, enough to raise the aggregate total for new films above expectations. The only other major surprise in the numbers was the utter failure of Resurrecting the Champ. It has two recognizeable stars, Samuel L Jackson and Josh Hartnett; it has 60% positive reviews; and it was in 1600 theaters. Despite all that it could not even gross two million dollars for the entire weekend, making it the biggest loser among widely distributed films since the ill-fated Lucky You. (Lucky You opened at $996 per screen for the weekend while Resurrecting The Champ made it all the way to $1152. To help put those numbers into perspective, the legendary fiasco Gigli pulled in $1695 per theater in its opening weekend!)
The weekly numbers have been in a tailspin the last four weeks, dropping from $166m to $141 to $110 to $90. Of course, a drop is expected this time of year, and even though that is a steeper deline than usual, the numbers started from such a lofty altitude that the weekend was still 8% above last year!
