The vampire film was expected to win the weekend, and did win Friday easily, with about the expected amount. The big positive surprise in an overcrowded field of newcomers was that the 3D re-issue of The Nightmare Before Christmas took the number seven spot - and that's for a Friday night! One thinks it will do relatively better on Saturday.
The negative surprise was Rendition, the political thriller starring Meryl Streep, Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaal, Alan Arkin, and others. Well, it is supposed to be a "thriller," but the reviews can be summed up in two words: "painfully boring." Audiences had even less interest in it than the critics, so it took in only $1.4 million Friday, despite being in 2250 theaters. It was expected to do about double that.
