Round-up, baseball's last day
Well, it would have been the last day except the Padres and Rockies have to play one more for the wild card slot. Season-ending highlights:
  • A-Rod finishes with 156 RBI
  • Magglio's .363 wins the batting title. I'm not 100% sure on this, but a quick glance at the record books tells me that this is the highest batting average for a Detroit Tiger since Charlie Gehringer hit .371 in 1937! The Tigers had an awesome offense that year. Four guys reached 200 hits and Hank Greenberg knocked in a healthy 183!
  • Mags is the first Tiger to win the title since Norm Cash in 1961.
  • The Mets collapse is official. The missed the playoffs completely. No major league team failed to finish first after having at least a seven-game lead with 17 to play, until the Mets of 2007. The Phillies joined the 1934 Cardinals and 1938 Cubs as the only teams to overcome a seven-game deficit in the final month.
  • Jimmy Rollins joined the 20-20-20-20 club, and also set the all-time record for most at-bats in a season. In fact, he destroyed the old record of 705, with an earth-shattering 716. Rollins almost made 40-20-30 in extra base hits (38-20-30). That particular club has only one member, Sunny Jim Bottomley. To me the coolest thing about Rollins is the power he generates from his tiny body. He weighs 168 pounds, stands 5'8", and collected 30 dingers! How does he get that much bat speed?
  • Matt Holliday will probably win the National League batting championship, but the game tomorrow counts in the stats, so it's his to win or lose - and it won't be that easy against Peavy! He's leading by .003. Holliday could also take the RBI crown away from Ryan Howard because of the extra game. He needs one to tie.
  • Speaking of Howard, he failed to reach 200 Ks (199).
