It was a VERY good day. I am Legend did $29 million and should come close to an $80 million opening weekend versus predictions in the fifties. It seems headed for $200 million blockbuster status.Alvin and the Chipmunks grossed more than double what was expected of it, and seems headed for $100 million. It should do $40 million for the weekend, compared to estimates in the mid to high teens.
Those two films combined for about a 70% market share. Alvin was in second with $13 million, and the third place film (Golden Compass) didn't even make three million.
And the fourth place film (Enchanted) didn't even make $2 million!
The fifth place finisher was No Country For Old Men, which was third on Thursday - the highest point it has reached after seven weeks of release. That's truly remarkable. Released in only 28 theaters in its opening weekend, it has picked up more and more screens every week and is now on 1348.
