Q: The upcoming Superbowl is "XLII" (42) - how many previous Super Bowls have there been.I don't know if anyone will answer this correctly (if Wikipedia is correct). The answer is 39. The first game to be called a Super Bowl was held in January of 1969. It may be the most famous football game ever played, when Joe Willie Namath made good on his guarantee to defeat the highly favored 13-1 Colts.
Per Wikipedia: "Super Bowl III was the third AFL-NFL Championship Game in professional American football, but the first to officially bear the name "Super Bowl" (The two previous AFL-NFL Championship Games would retroactively be called "Super Bowls" as well)."
(NOTE: Although the official title of the first two games was the AFL-NFL World Championship Game, the media of the day did already use the then-unofficial name "Super Bowl.")
