Weekend Box Office Results for May 30–June 1, 2008

It turned out that Sex and the City was a one-day phenomenon. After the elderly sexpots trounced Indy $26-$12 on Friday, the even more elderly Dr Jones came back to win both Saturday and Sunday.

S&TC's $55 million is still a record for the best opening weekend by a chick-flick without the words "Harry Potter" in the title, and ranks fifth among opening weekends for R-rated films.

Many young men go to the movies weekly, and they had no interest in a flick about the loves and purchases of women old enough to date Max Bialystock. The beneficiary of those circumstances was an obscure horror film called The Strangers, which pulled in $20 million - more than doubling expectations! (And more than doubling its budget on opening weekend.) For guys, The Strangers was the only game in town.
