William Warfield sings Ol' Man River in another version of Showboat.
Warfield's father's church was only a few blocks from my grandmother's house on Joseph Avenue in Rochester, New York. My Uncle Joe (a singer, later a philharmonic conductor and a music teacher at the University of Florida) and Warfield studied with the same voice teachers, attended the Eastman School together, and became friends. Warfield's name was commonly bandied about our dinner table. Great voice. I still like his Ol' Man River best of all.
