No film has cracked the all-time top 25 in this millennium. The Dark Knight has a chance, but will probably fall short. Although it is #2 in terms of dollars, it is still only #39 in terms of the number of tickets sold. It will probably pass Shrek 2 (in slot #29)to become the top film of the millennium, but is unlikely to climb much higher than that.
It us unlikely that any modern film will ever emerge as #1. Americans used to go to about seven times as many movies before television came along. In 1946, the average American went to 34 films per year; Americans went to films 4.8 billion times in all. That plummeted from 1947-64 as television grew, then added color and grew some more. The number has held steadily at about 5 films per year since 1964 (1.4 billion tickets). Details here.
