The Bat held on to the #1 spot for another week against two niche films.Pineapple Express and Traveling Pants 2 were both released on Wednesday. When films have a highly specific target audience which anticipates them enhusiastically, the hard-core fans attend ASAP, so those two films lost some of their weekend gross to Wed/Thur.
This is the time of year when the film revenues start to drop dramatically, but this year's drop was precipitous, resulting in a 23% decline from the comparable weekend last year. I think next weekend will probably turn that around with a new Star Wars pic and the controversial Tropic Thunder.
