Weekend Box Office Results for September 19–21, 2008

Weekend Box Office Results for September 19–21, 2008

In the aggregate, the weekend was about typical for this time of year, and the new releases performed about as expected. Within that group there were a few tiny surprises. The Samuel Jackson thriller did about 30% better than expected to take the #1 spot, but that was balanced off by the fact that the Dane Cook comedy bombed, falling 30% below anticipated levels. The other new releases were slightly above expectations.

Some of the carry-overs dropped faster than anticipated, most notably the Tyler Perry film. That doesn't mean it got some bad word-of-mouth. Tyler's films seem to perform like genre event pictures (which I suppose they are) in that the results are front-loaded more than usual, and the percentage drop is therefore larger when week two rolls around.
