"A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him 'constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil.'"Note: Nationwide, Obama actually took 54% of the Catholic vote, compared to only 45% of Protestants.
What's more interesting to me is that he actually lost the combined Christian vote 51-48. (He won Catholics by 9 points and lost Protestants by the same margin, but there are twice as many Protestants as Catholics). So much for America being a Christian nation. You would think that fact would have cost him the election, since 81% of voters are Christian, but Obama took an incredible 75% of the non-Christian vote. He took 78% of the Jewish vote, 75% of the athiest/agnostic bloc, and 73% of the "other."
Sidebar: Among white Protestants, Obama lost by 31 points (34-65)! You'd think it would be impossible to overcome that large a deficit since those voters represent nearly half (42%) of the electorate, but he won the non-Christian and non-white votes by even larger margins.
The likelihood of any voter to choose Obama was inversely correlated to frequency of Church attendance. McCain won 55-43 among those who attend Church weekly or more, but Obama won 59-39 among the "a few times a year" group, and 67-30 among the "never" group. (The "monthly" group was split fairly evenly, slightly favoring Obama.)
Here are all the exit polls, if you care to review them.
