Weekend Box Office Results for November 28–30, 2008

Weekend Box Office Results for November 28–30, 2008

  • The three new films all performed better than expected, and Four Christmases ended up a surprise winner for both the three-day and the five-day period.
  • Twilight tanked completely. It turned out to be a one-day wonder. It was already sinking by the end of last weekend, and the bleeding continued this week. On the other hand, it's still going to be about a $150 million film, and the budget was a modest $37m, so expect sequels.
  • Bolt followed a disappointing opening weekend with a tremendous second week in which it improved its ranking, and actually took in more than last week! Parents finally discovered it.
  • Two Oscar hopefuls played to packed houses in NY and LA. Although they were in fewer than 50 theaters, Milk and Slumdog Millionaire finished 10th and 11th overall!
  • The weekend finished an incredible 105% over last year. (This happened because of the nature of week 48, which may come before or after Thanksgiving. Last year it was not a holiday weekend, this year it is.)
