The Academy is required by its by-laws to nominate every significant holocaust movie, however trite or inept. Perhaps you remember the year Raiders of the Lost Ark lost the Best Picture Oscar to Disney's heart-rending "Auschwitz Upon a Star," which featured Jiminy Cricket and Pinocchio as concentration camp prisoners and Donald Duck as Herman Goering.This year may bring a change to the official protocol. The rules committee is scheduled to debate whether to replace the mandatory "holocaust" nomination with a mandatory "gay" nomination. I hope they do. It's time to move on.
