Weekend Box Office Results for January 23–25, 2009

Weekend Box Office Results for January 23–25, 2009
In what has to be considered at least a mild upset, the Mall Cop movie is a repeater at #1. The werewolf/vampire movie underperformed to expectations.

Unlike the previous weeks, the carry-overs did well this week, some of them because of Oscar nominations, others just because of weak competition from new releases. Benjamin Button, a best picture nominee, actually improved from last week.

The exception to the success of the carry-overs was Notorious, which dropped like a rock (72%). That is the largest drop of all-time for any film opening over $20 million. The previous record was set in July by Hellboy 2.

Even without a powerhouse at the top, the weekend was excellent by January standards, right in line with the other non-holiday weekends this month. The four weekends of this year are all in the top five January weekends of all time! (1, 3, 4, and 5)
