The rest of the weekend was an improvement over the dismal Friday, but it was still the first week of the year to be below last year. The tepid results were expected. KJ even predicted the dramatic drop for Watchmen. Overall, the top ten produced about the results that were expected. The three new films were expected to take in about $43 million and they took in $42m. The seven carry-overs were expected to gross about $42 million, and they took in about $44m.
Watchmen did not set the record for the biggest drop of any $50 million opener, although it came close and settled comfortably into the number three spot on that list. The first Hulk film holds that record at 69.7%, and Watchmen came in at 67.3%. In between them is The Village at 67.5%. The Hulk finished at $132m and The Village at $114, so that range pretty well defines the presumed boundaries for the final Watchman gross.
