It was the first disappointing weekend of the summer, and one of the very few this year. The total gross dropped more than 20% from the comparable week last year.The holdovers did very nicely. The two heavy hitters, Up and The Hangover, had relatively small percentage decreases from last week.
The problem was that there was absolutely no enthusiasm for the new releases. Pelham 1-2-3 came in about 20% below expectations, and the Eddie Murphy movie was a major bomb, never even having reached half of the predicted amount.
