He comes in in the ninth with a 9-6 lead. First three guys reach base. No outs and the clean-up hitter at bat. Oh-oh. It feels like another Lidge disaster, and that feeling intensifies when Jeff Francouer slashes what looks like a sure hit - a line drive up the middle. The runners take off. Second baseman Eric Bruntlett, for some reason, was playing right on the bag. He makes the catch with a small jump which carries him right to the second base sack, which gets one runner instantly, then the other runner just about runs into him, thus ending the game with an unassisted triple play - the first time that has happened since 1927!Also in this game - Pedro Martinez joins Smoltz in the "sudedenly unwashed-up" corp, and extends his record to 2-0. He didn't pitch great, but the Phillies got him lots of runs. In fact, his ERA is over five, but he hasn't lost yet with the league's best offense behind him.
