Surprise - carry-over sleeper hit Paranormal Activity hit the top of the charts, although it was in fewer than 2000 theaters and was in competition with three new wide releases plus the Amelia Earhart film in limited distro.Astro Boy and Cirque du Freak are headed for bomb territory, having each grossed about two million from about 3000 theaters (7th and 8th place). Astro Boy was the worse of the two since it was in more theaters and grossed less. The sad summary: $600 per theater. That's not megabomb turf. The legendary Delgo grossed only $59 per theater on its opening day. (And $19 per theater on the following Monday!) On the other hand, Astro Boy has a very good shot at joining the all-time bottom ten among films in 3000 or more theaters. This year has already contributed two films to that list: Shorts (Robert Rodriguez's career embarrassment as writer/director/producer) and Imagine That (poor Eddie Murphy is no longer capable of embarrassment).
The Amelia Earhart film actually did fairly well, having grossed $1589 per theater, a figure topped on Friday only by Saw VI and Paranormal Activity.
