Daily Box Office for Friday, November 13, 2009

2012 had an insane opening by November standards, with $23.7m. Based on preliminary estimates, its market share was above 57%. There has never been a case where the market share of a non-summer opening exceeded 60%, and the only ones above 57% are The Passion of the Christ and two Harry Potter films.

Also performing brilliantly was the Oscar candidate Precious, which finished in fourth place despite being in a mere 174 theaters. Its average per theater was nearly twice as high as 2012's, which was pretty damned high to begin with. Last week Precious managed to finish in the top twelve despite being in only 18 theaters in the entire country. That's not a typo. Just eighteen theaters - but an astronomical $104,000 per theater.

Pirate Radio was a mediocre performer, raking in less than a million in 885 theaters. It finished 11th overall and had the 4th highest average per theater.
