Weekend Box Office Results for November 27-29, 2009

The Blind Side almost pulled off the upset of the ages. It lost to Twilight: New Moon 42-40, after losing last week 142-34. If you are following the math, that means that Blind Side did better in its second weekend than in its first, no mean feat in itself, while New Moon was dropping more than 70%, which was the greatest drop ever experienced by a film opening with $50m or more. (The record was previously held by Ang Lee's Hulk movie.) It was also the steepest decline for a film in 4000 or more theaters

Earlier this year, another film set the record for the greatest drop by a film opening with $40m or more. That was the Friday the 13th remake, which also set the record for the steepest decline among films in 3000 or more theaters.

The Blind Side was expected to do about $28 million for the 5-day weekend. It actually took in $57 million. This makes the second straight weekend in which it doubled expectations. I can't remember that ever happening before. The word of mouth on this film is fantastic. (My son and daughter-in-law came back raving about it.)

Old Dogs pulled in $17m for fourth place. It fell about 30% shy of expectations.

Ninja Assassin took in $13m for 6th, roughly as expected.

The Fantastic Mr Fox could do no better than $7m, leaving it a weak ninth. It was not expected to do well, but it did some 40% worse than even the meager expectations.

The Road turned out some great numbers in a measly 111 theaters. It led all films in the "average per theater" category, but the expansion plans are indefinite at this time. That's a post-Apocalypic fantasy with Viggo, Robert Duvall, Guy Pearce, Molly Parker and Charlize, adapted from a Cormac McCarthy book.
