This day in baseball history - 50 years ago this week
It was a black day in Kansas City. The A's traded some 25-year-old kid named Maris to the Yankees for a foam #1 finger and a box of fungo bats. In 1959, before getting Maris, the Yankees had fallen to a weak third place. Maris promptly won two MVPs in his first two years with the Yankees ('60 and '61), and a 1960 Gold Glove to boot. The Yankees would win five consecutive AL pennants in Roger's first five years with the team. When the Yankees traded him to St Louis, the Cardinals promptly won two NL pennants in Maris's only two years there. Talk about Mr. October. In the space of only nine years (1960-68), Roger played in seven different Fall Classics!
