Shutter Island performed well. It owned the weekend and did some 20% better than expected. It was Scorsese's best opening by a very wide margin. It took in about $40 million, and no previous Scorsese film had even reached $30M on its opening weekend, although The Aviator pulled in $30M during its first weekend in 2000-theater distribution, which happened a bit down the road.Shutter Island was the only new film. Valentine's Day fell by 69.5% and finished in second. That was the third-largest drop in history for films with opening weekends of $50m of more. And it is so close to the record that it may yet set the record when the estimates become finalized. (Twilight 70%, Hulk 69.7%, Valentine's Day 69.5%, Wolverine 69.0%)
Avatar held on to third place, and has now grossed $687M.
