The Last Exorcism and Takers finished in a dead heat for first place, with each of them hovering around $21m. While The Last Exorcism took Friday, it appears that Takers triumphed on both Saturday and Sunday. We won't know which one took the weekend until we have the final numbers.
Neither of them was supposed to do that well. The Last Exorcism did about 20% better than expected, but the big surprise was Takers. The Weekend Warrior originally had it pegged below $10m, but he later raised that to $12.7m. The film's producer used Twitter to called "bullshit" on those numbers, and he was right. It took in $21m.
Last week's movies dropped hard. None of them remained in the top five, and only one of them managed to beat 7-week-old Inception, and that one just barely did so. Vampires Suck and Piranha 3D fell especially hard (about 57% each).
The special edition of Avatar took in about $5000 per screen - which beat every single one of the carry-over films! That will come as a blessed relief to impoverished James Cameron, who is probably searching his couches for spare change as you read this. He's said to be down to his last billions.
