I still remember clearly when the cover of Esquire declared Two-Lane Blacktop the film of the year in 1971, even though the year had just begun.

As I looked up The Cockfighter, I just noticed that Hellman, after decades out of the spotlight, has entered a film at Venice this year. He's close to 80.
