The new releases disappointed, albeit to different degrees.
Wall Street 2 did take first place fairly easily, but took in less than one might have expected ($7M). It will gross about $20M for the weekend. The expectation was more like $30M.
Legend of the Guardians was very soft. It was expected to contend for first place with a total in the mid twenties, but finished third with less than $5 million. It is the kind of film that does better on Saturday, but it still seems to be headed for a tepid total in the mid-teens, and seems to have no chance to reach its forecasted $25m.
You Again wasn't expected to do much, and will do even less. The experts thought it might get up to fourth place with about $12 million. As of today, it appears to be headed for fifth place with a gross of some $8 million.
The Virginity Hit, the R-rated comedy produced by Will Ferrell, seems to be on its way to some kind of negative record. It took in only $105,000 in 700 theaters. It seems to be headed for the "top" five on the all-time list called "Worst openings, 600 or more theaters," and it has a very good chance to be the 2010 leader on that list. So far the annual champ in this category is something called Standing Ovation, which opened with $343,000.
