Fantastic finishes: Pitchers who won 20 games in their final season
Let's exclude the 19th century, when winning 20 might not have indicated quality.

  • Sandy Koufax retired after going 27-9 with a 1.73 ERA. His arm gave out.
  • Mike Mussina quit after a 20-9 season in 2008. His lifetime W-L pct is .638 - higher than Bob Feller or Cy Young! Although he was an ace and pitched for good teams, he never won a World Series. Moose didn't choose his retirement time all that well. The Yankees won the World Series the year after he retired. They also won the year before he showed up!
  • Henry Schmidt went 22-13 in his rookie year, and that was also his final year. WTF? Henry was 30 years old when he hit the NL, and he preferred life back in Oakland. After one year pitching for Brooklyn in the NL, he returned to Oakland and pitched in the PCL for a couple of years, then kicked around in D ball for a while until he was out of gas.
  • Eddie Cicotte and Lefty Williams won 20 in their final seasons. They did not leave baseball voluntarily. After the 1920 season, the infamous Black Sox pitchers were banned from baseball along with Shoeless Joe and five others.
