Vince Vaughn Wants "Gay" Joke to Stay in Film

Vince Vaughn Wants 'Gay' Joke to Stay in Film

I can't speak for Vince, but I think he's right. His joke had absolutely nothing to do with sexual orientation. He used the word "gay" in a different sense, as in "lame," the sense kids mean when they say "Dude, having your mother drive you to the prom is totally gay." I never use that particular meaning myself, but it's common usage. See "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" for about a zillion such references, none of which have anything to do with homosexuals. Vaughn even pointed that out as part of the joke. That's the nature of language. Words have multiple meanings. If you can't use the word "gay" to mean "lame," you then you can't use the word "lame" either, because that offends certain handicapped people.

The other point he makes here is that there are no special rules for certain groups. Comedy is about making fun of all people. It's not about making fun of all people except gays and Muslims. If you start to make exceptions, then everybody wants an exception. Eventually, it's "Oh, you can't make fun of conservatives. There's so much conservative bullying."

Fuck it. I plan to continue to ridicule all people, regardless of their race, creed, ethnicity, nationality, politics, or sexual orientation. If I have failed to offend you, either you haven't been paying attention, or I haven't gotten to you yet. Undoubtedly, some people with bad eyesight will write in to say "I'm offended that you made fun of the visually impaired from Ethiopia," to which I will respond, "I didn't. You just read 'Estonia' wrong. Get a new prescription, four-eyes."
