The experts had Harry Potter pegged almost perfectly. The film came in around $125m. Weekend Warrior had projected $128m. In terms of unadjusted gross, that was the second-best opening of all time among autumn releases, and the sixth-best opening overall.
Russell Crowe's The Next Three Days got completely lost in the shuffle, taking in less than seven million for the weekend and finishing a weak fifth, despite appearing in 2500 theaters. That was one of the worst box office performances of the year among wide releases, but still far better than MacGruber's four million in roughly the same number of theaters.
By the way, Potter finished with 79% positive reviews, while The Next Three Days came in at 41%.
