Surprise of the week: The Justin Bieber flick, a documentary about the lad's phenomenal rise, has pulled in 62% positive reviews.
Gnomeo and Juliet is hovering right around 50%
The Eagle, an adventure pic about second-century Britain, is at 38% positive as of now.
Just Go With It, with Sandler and Aniston, is trailing the field with 29%. That's kinda typical for a Sandler movie. Since 2007 he's written, and/or produced, and/or starred in five films below 40%, ranging from 10% to 36%. On the other hand, not one of them grossed less than $100 million. In fact there is a bit of an inverse relationship between the reviews and the box office. The worst-reviewed of that group was the biggest grosser; the best reviewed was the lowest grosser. Just before that time came Click and The Longest Yard, which scored 32% and 31% in the review department, and grossed $137 million and $158 million. In other words, his films make money, are loved by mainstream audiences, and also provide steady work for his close friends. If you were Sandler, would you change the formula and strive to please the critics? Oh, maybe from time to time, but for the most part you'd keep delivering what audiences like and critics hate.
