The biggest surprise to me? Alabama State in a play-in game. There are 345 Division 1 teams, and they had the 6th-easiest schedule, per Sagarin. Despite that, they could not assemble a winning record, and they were blown out by several teams you never heard of. They are almost certainly the worst team ever to be invited to the tournament in modern history.
(To be fair, they had some injury/illness issues early in the season and improved substantially when they had a full roster at the end of the year.)
How did they get to the big dance? The won the SWAC championship game against Grambling. Yup, Grambling, despite going 12-21 against the 5th-easiest schedule in Division 1, made a conference championship game. Prior to the conference championship tournament, Sagarin rated Grambling 332nd of the 345 Division 1 teams. What a conference! That conference played 20 games against teams rated in the top fifty and emerged with a perfect 0-20 record.
I hope Alabama State wins the play-in because I want to see the point spread against Ohio State. Sagarin rates OSU 34 points better on a neutral court.
