VCU not only beat #1 Kansas, but for a while they were slaughtering them, 39-21. Kansas then went on a 23-7 run to pull within two, but VCU stayed calm and turned it on again for a ten-point victory. VCU couldn't put up a 2-point basket to save their lives (9 for 28, 32%), but that doesn't matter when you can drain threes like free throws. VCU outscored Kansas 36-6 on three-pointers. (Kansas shot 2-for-21. You and I could have done better. And they missed 13 free throws as well.) Between VCU's 36 points on threes and another 17 from the line, who needs layups? Those 53 points were almost as much as the entire Kansas output.
Before the calendar flipped over to March, VCU had played only one top-25 team all year, and that was a lowly #24, and was a loss to boot. And then they started losing to some weak teams. In January they lost by double digits to 12-19 Georgia State. In February they gave up 91 points in another double digit loss to 11-20 Northeastern. Of the 345 Division 1 teams, they finished 301st in rebounding! After having finished fourth in their second-tier conference (George Mason won), then failing to win the conference tournament (Old Dominion won), they didn't even think they would get invited to the NCAA.
There are no #1s or #2s in the final four. U Conn is a #3 seed, Kentucky a #4. There is a #11 (VCU) and a #8 (Butler). What's more, that crazy unheard-of #11 is starting to shape up as the favorite. Ya gotta love it. The best thing about the national championship game is that it will feature either Kentucky or U Conn, but not both. Either Butler or VCU will be there because they play each other in the semis.
One guy in the ESPN challenge did pick all four of the final teams correctly. He's the only entrant out of 5.5 million to pick the winner of all four of this weekend's games. What's more, he has picked VCU to go all the way. You have to be some kind of a madman to pick a play-in team to win it all, but so far he's looking like a mad genius who could see what everyone else overlooked!
President Obama is still in the 95th percentile in the contest, but has no chance at any more points. He got none of the final four correct. (He picked the four #1 seeds). Dick Vitale and Snoop Dogg also failed to pick any of the final four. They are in the 21st and 45th percentile, "failure, baby" and "fizzle," respectively.

If you picked the final four, you are a basketball genius.

ReplyDeleteThis time of year I just like to point out the inconsistencies from people who think a single elimination tourney is some supremely fair and balanced and perfect way of picking a “champion.” Especially when you consider teams are picked and more importantly seeded by a largely anonymous group who answer to no one and provide absolutely no reasoning to justify their actions. In this respect the BCS seems like an open book in comparison.
