The Emancipation Proclamation is probably the most total BS of anything you learned in school. Lincoln's 1863 declaration declared all the slaves in the Confederacy free, but did not free the slaves in the slave-holding states which remained part of the union. Since Lincoln had no control over the Confederacy in 1863, his declaration freed nobody.
