Daily Box Office for Friday, July 22, 2011. The Cap crushes Harry Potter

The Cap is doing better than expected, while Potter seems to have stepped off a cliff. I thought Mr. B.O. Mojo might have been exaggerating somewhat when he predicted that Potter would dip below $50 million, but it now seems that he was right. Potter took in only $14 million on Friday. The Cap came pretty close to doubling that!

As I noted yesterday, Deathly Hollows 1 took in $25.9 million on the Wed/Thursday after opening weekend, compared to $23.5 million for DH2. An extrapolation of those numbers to the weekend totals would lead one to conclude that the latest Potter would take in only $44.6M this weekend. My gut told me that was too low. After all, the damned thing took in $169M last weekend! Amazingly enough, my gut seems to be less dependable than math and logic. Whoda thunk it?
