Detroit Tigers vs. Minnesota Twins - Box Score - August 27, 2011 - ESPN

It's August 27th, and Verlander has already won 20!

It was actually one of his poorest efforts of the year. In six innings he allowed 11 base runners and two dingers against the puny Twins. One of the guys who homered against him had not hit any previous homers this year.

The Twins are now fielding one of the weakest line-ups in the history of the live ball era. Only one of their players has an OPS over .700. Their number three hitter has an OPS of .605. They have three starters with OPS's in the 500s and another in the 400s, same as the famous 1906 White Sox - "the hitless wonders." But the so-called hitless wonders, with about the same offense, were considered to be anemic in a league with a .621 OPS. The current league OPS is .726, so the Twins are much worse in comparison.

In other words, Verlander can thank his lucky stars he wasn't going for #20 against the Red Sox.
