Weekend Box Office Results for August 26-28, 2011

Weekend Box Office Results for August 26-28, 2011

The much-loved drama, The Help, is an unqualified hit, after taking first place another weekend and managing to seem hurricane-proof. It dropped only a modest 28% from last week.

The three new releases performed weakly, as predicted by their Friday performance.

Colombiana came in about as expected, with $10M. That total was not expected to be good enough for second place, but it was, thanks to the weak performances of the other new releases.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark underperformed with a tepid $8.7 million.

The Paul Rudd comedy was largely ignored, with a mere $6.6 million gross in 2600 theaters, but Our Idiot Brother has probably already made a profit. Hell, if the producers made good deals on the ancillary rights, this film probably would have made a profit with a gross of zero. It was made for a cheap-jack $5 million, so that anemic box office performance is actually satisfactory from the standpoint of its investors (although they certainly must have hoped for more).
